Lack of justice for Jassi triggers outrage across Canada
Thu, February 09 2006
Canadians across the country are outraged over the slow grind of justice in the case of Maple Ridge beautician Jaswinder “Jassi” Kaur Sidhu who was tortured and murdered after she married a poor rickshaw driver against the wishes of her family.
Jassi and Mithu share a sweet moment The case was also the subject of the CBC documentary The Murdered Bride aired in partnership with the film Murder Unveiled which was inspired by the modern day Romeo and Juliet tale. “Shame, shame RCMP and Canada!” wrote N. Pratt, an office assistant in Vancouver. “How much respect can you have in a system that won't stand up for its citizens?” R. Hirschkorn of Vernon, B.C. said that he was “absolutely appalled with the seeming lack of concern and action with both our Canadian government and the RCMP.” Sadaf, a student in Toronto, said that if the Canadian government “can’t help us is such situation, what’s the point of having Canadian nationality.” It has been more than five years since the 25-year-old Jassi was kidnapped, beaten and strangled to death on June 8, 2000. Her husband Sukhwinder “Mithu” Singh was left for dead by hired assassins who attacked him with swords and sharpened sticks. Indian police in court papers alleged that Jassi’s own mother Malkiat Kaur and uncle Surjit Singh Badesha gave the order to kill. The wealthy Maple Ridge farming family has denied any involvement in the incident.
The Asian Pacific Post was among the first papers to uncover the Jassi story and what really happened.
Now from our archives, we bring you exclusive images from the real life story of Jaswinder "Jassi" Kaur Sidhu.
Below are photos of the contract killers who murdered Jassi whose only crime was falling in love with a poor man from India.
We are also bringing you a sequence of letters written by Jassi to Mithu, the man she loved, starting with this Valentine's Day note.
Translation:
Valentine’s Day
February 14 / 98 (Punjabi) This day is a day of joy for everyone. This day love is celebrated, when lovers remember the ones they love. If you love me Mithu you will love my card. You asked me something on the phone, you surely remember. But if you don’t, looking at this card you will remember. See it and your heart will be content. (English) Happy Valentine’s Day!! I love you my sweetheart.
